Personal Work: Roadtrips and Motorcycles

August was a fun month for my personal photography, during which I took a solo 9-day roadtrip through Colorado and photographed motorcycle track days here in New Mexico. I didn’t take many photos in Colorado, as I ended spending a lot of time in coffee shops catching up on admin work, but I did manage to snap a few frames that I like, all with my Fujifilm X100. Track days were also quite fun, where I shot everything from one turn with a 70-200mm lens. Next time I hope to have better track access to get a few more perspectives, but I was happy with how things came out. I grew up around motorcycles, going to track days and races in Florida all the time with my dad. I love the energy and intensity that the riders bring, putting it on the line to chase speed, and my goal is for that intensity to come through in the photos.

Personal photography and spec work are really important to expanding your photography career, as they allow you to experiment with composition and editing and find your voice as a photographer. I always recommend having professional gear and then a smaller camera that is just fun to shoot with that you will bring with you everywhere. I can’t tell you how many times sharing my personal work has gotten me a job. Clients can see the passion and artistic vision that you put into your personal work, so it’s important to keep doing it and sharing it. It’s also just fun: I’m not out there trying to get a great photo, I’m just shooting what I see and enjoying every moment of it. It’s a great way to reconnect with why you chose photography in the first place: to document your life and express yourself artistically.
